Born
in
Nola,
Italy
at
the
age
of
fifteen
he
entréed
the
Dominican
Order,
but
left
in
his
twenties,
as
he
did
not
want
to
hide
under
the
cloak
of
Catholism.
This
was
a
common
practice
amoung
many
followers
of
the
Old
Religion
during
the
era
of
persecutions
by
the
Church.
According
to
oral
tradition,
it
was
common
practice
for
Old
Religion
families
to
send
their
children
off
to
be
priests
and
nuns
of
the
Roman
Caholic
Church.
Once
in
place,
they
could
warn
their
families
of
impending
danger
from
the
Inquisition.
Giordano
was
a
head
strong
man
and
truth
was
very
important
to
his
nature,
therefore
he
would
not
compromise.
Giordano
believed
in
the
Egyuptain
pantheon
and
also
the
theories
of
Copernicus,
wheich
stated
that
the
E
arth
went
around
the
Sun.
He
believed
that
there
were
multiplicites
of
Universes
peopled
as
was
the
Earth.
Just
as
our
own
Sun
is
part
of
our
Solar
System,
Giordano
believed
that,
so
are
all
stars
Suns
to
other
Solar
Systems.
He
was
fascinated
by
all
that
was
magical
and
mystical,
and
he
delved
into
the
Occult.
Bruno
traveled
throughout
Europe
and
was
well
received
by
Elizabeth
I
and
here
favourite
poet,
Sir
Phillip
Sydney.
Bruno
lectured
at
Oxford
University
where,
while
speaking
on
the
theroies
of
Copernicus,
he
incurred
teh
displeasure
of
a
few
of
the
eminent
Doctors
of
Letters,
and
decided
to
leave
England.
He
traveled
on
the
Continent
but
became
homesick
for
Italy
and
so
returned
to
his
homeland.
In
Venice,
Italy
he
became
tutor
to
a
rich
man,
Giovanni
{Zuan}
Mocenigo,
who
retained
Bruno
to
"help
improve
his
memory".
In
time
the
man
asked
to
be
taught
magic.
Bruno
refused,
saying
he
knew
nothing
of
magic
[having
surmised
Mocenigo
to
be
a
spy
for
the
Inquistion}.
Moncenigo
became
angered
with
Bruno,
trumped
up
charges
against
him,
and
turned
Bruno
over
to
the
Venetian
Inquistion.
Bruno
was
found
guilty
of
heresy
and
,
a
few
months
later,
was
turned
over
to
the
Roman
Inquisition.
In
Rome
Bruno
was
put
into
the
Dungeons
of
the
Castel
Sant
Angelo,
where
he
remained
from
1592
to
1600.
Brought
before
the
Roman
Inquisitional
Court,
Pope
Clement
VII
condemned
Giordano
Bruno
to
be
burned
aliveon
Campo
di
Fiore,
the
Place
of
Flowers.
Many
pilgrims
witnessed
his
death
on
the
morning
of
17
February
1600.
On
9
June
1899
a
statue
of
Giordano
Bruno
was
erected
on
the
spot
of
his
death
at
Campo
di
Fiore.
Many
men
and
women
of
Free
Thought
were
there
on
that
day
for
the
unveiling
of
this
immense
bronze
statue.
The
records
of
Giordano
Bruno's
trial
and
execution
were
hidden
until
during
the
time
of
Pope
Leo
XIII,
when
an
assistant
custodian
of
the
secret
archives
of
the
Vatican
found
them.
Needless
to
say,
the
Pope
was
not
overjoyed
at
the
discovery
and
ordered
that
the
trial
records
be
shown
to
no
one.
The
papers
were
lost
amoung
the
personal
papers
of
Pope
Pius
IX,
the
predecessor
of
Pope
Leo
XIII.
However,
Angelo
Mercati
in
1940
found
them
after
a
long
search
of
fifteen
years.
For
ancestor
Lori
Bruno
and
her
family
the
memories
of
terror,
the
"Unholy
Inquisition"
and
the
horrors
the
family
suffered
were
not
to
be
forgotten.
The
stories
were
told
to
the
new
generation
so
they
would
never
forget
.
The
lessons
were
strong;
survive
blend
in
.
